For those of you still visiting TVRD.org after several months of no changes, thank you!

When I started TVRD.org in 2005, it was my attempt to begin to get local television station research directors talking among themselves. In lieu of user input, TVRD.org became a Nielsen-centric news highlight blog featuring items I felt might be of interest to my peers.

In 2007, I became Director of Research Services for OneDomain, Inc, the provider of MediaOffice ratings analysis and sales software currently in use by nearly 550 local television stations in the US.

MRI Speeds Up Magazine Ratings

The magazine business may get a much-needed shot in the arm from the announcement that Mediamark Research & Intelligence will start delivering its issue-specific magazine ratings anywhere from two to six weeks earlier, depending on the publishing schedule of the magazine.

In a media marketplace which values speed in measuring and managing ad campaigns, this could boost magazines' ability to compete with online media, which has led the way in (rapid) measurability. According to MRI, issue-specific audience data for weekly magazines will now be available six weeks after publication, two weeks earlier than previously. Likewise, audience data for biweeklies will be reported within eight weeks, down from 10; monthlies will be available within nine weeks, down from 12; and bimonthlies will be available within 12 weeks, down from 18.

After more than three decades of providing the ad industry with estimates and projections for advertising cost inflation among the major media, Interpublic is phasing the service out as part of a broader restructuring of its ad forecasting and modeling effort.

While less well known than the semi-annual advertising volume forecasts it releases, the media price inflation index has been a key resource for a wide variety of industry stakeholders, including agencies, media vendors, Wall Street, economists and the academic world. The index, the last of which was published in September 2008, was produced by now retired Interpublic Director of Forecasting Bob Coen, and published each year by the American Association of Advertising Agencies.
